Women Cleaning Energy at the Clean Energy Education & Empowerment Symposium

On September 16th, Joyce Ferris spoke at the Clean Energy Education & Empowerment (C3E) Initiative‘s 2014 Symposium held at MIT. The 2014 Symposium was themed, “Urban Strategies for a New Energy Future,” and Ferris spoke on a panel titled, “Making Wise Energy Investments in an Era of Constraints.”

Joyce shared the panel with Jacquelyn Dadakis (Managing Director of GCE Services, Green Coast Enterprises), Stacy Richards (Founding Director, SEDA-Council of Governments’ Energy Resource Center (ERC)), and Mary Barber (Director, New Jersey Clean Energy, Environmental Defense Fund). The four innovators discussed the challenges of establishing partnerships and programs between public, private, and non-profit interests to drive energy efficiency in the built environment.

c3e panelThe C3E Initiative was launched in 2010 to close the gender gap and increase women’s participation and leadership in energy finance and policy, and the fields of science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) to meet our future clean energy challenges.

The C3E Initiative has four programs in the U.S.:

  1. An annual symposium that provides a forum for networking and building a sustained national and international community of professionals dedicated to advancing the careers and goals of women in clean energy
  2. Annual awards that recognize mid-career women who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and accomplishments in clean energy
  3. The designation of 30 distinguished senior professionals who represent the Initiative as ambassadors at public forums and work to strength the recruitment, retention, and advancement of highly qualified women in the energy field
  4. The online community forum that enables women the sharing of information, insight, and inspiration around the world

Blue Hill Honored as ‘Best for Workers’, Creating Higher Quality Jobs That Serve a Higher Purpose

Today, Blue Hill and 79 other companies worldwide were recognized for creating the highest quality jobs by the nonprofit B Lab with the release of the third annual ‘B Corp Best for Workers’ list. This analysis includes metrics regarding compensation and benefits, health and wellness programs, parent-friendly flex time and leave policies, professional development and internal promotion, corporate culture, profit sharing and ownership opportunities.

“With Millennials’ increasing demand for work-life integration, B Corps are winning the talent war,” said Jay Coen Gilbert, co-founder B Lab. “The Best for Workers Honorees are leading the way with their commitment to creating high quality jobs that serve a higher purpose.”

The ‘B Corp Best for Workers’ list honors businesses that earned an worker impact score in the top 10% of all Certified B Corporations on the B Impact Assessment, a rigorous and comprehensive assessment of a company’s impact on its workers, community, and the environment. Honorees were recognized among micro, small, and mid-sized businesses.

Wrangling Cowboys at the ACEEE Energy Efficiency Finance Forum

At the ACEEE Energy Efficiency Finance Forum in Washington DC May 12 and 13th, Joyce Ferris participated on a panel with representatives from  American University, Georgetown University and SciEnergy Joyce shared Blue Hill’s efficiency services model with the audience.

The ACEEE forum brought together a diverse group of innovators in the energy efficiency market.  In a recent article, Greentech Media describes the innovators as cowboys; energy efficiency investment is such a young industry that most practitioners and project developers have to establish their own precedent, and everyone’s doing it a little bit differently.

While the diversity of solutions is exciting, investors are looking for more consistency and maturity in the industry.  The forum and the article both remarked on this change in the general attitude towards energy efficiency investment.  The market remains an innovative space, but there’s progress towards borrowing best practices from other industries.  There’s a lot of money that could be put to work and a lot of energy to be saved.  Right now we’re all working to get on the same page to make it happen, and happen efficiently.


Use Energy Efficiency to Keep Football at Your College


This morning, NPR reported on how many colleges are cutting sports teams in order to direct more funding to scholarships. Perhaps such sacrifices could be avoided by reducing the amount of resources that are wasted through inefficient systems. Landsburg spoke on the panel “Driving Entrepreneurship in the Region,” alongside moderator Jaine Lucas, Executive Director, Innovation & Entrepreneurship Institute, Temple University and panelists Jie Du, President & CEO, JDP Therapeutics Inc, RoseAnn B. Rosenthal, President & CEO, Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern PA, and Ellen Edelman Weber, Executive Director, Robin Hood Ventures. The panel focused on regional resources for emerging companies.
